Google Gemini Gems
New way to create personal AI assistants
News
Replit now gives you the ability to build and deploy apps with a prompt.
Reflection 70B open source LLM appears to not be as advertized. It is either an Antrhopic wrapper - meaing it is merely a front end stapled onto an Antrhopic model - or it is just plane fraud. There has been a great deal of difficulty in getting the claimed results to be duplicated. Reflectin 70B model is supposed to be a self-learning model.
There is a new LLM visualization tool on the block.
Prosecutors allege Michael Smith from North Carolina used AI to create thousands of songs by fake bands and created thousands of streams managed by AI to game Spotify and other straming platforms.
New Google Gemini feature Gems has been launched. It will allow you to create personal AI experts on any topic. Gems can be tailored with specific instructions to assist with projects, brainstorming, and repetitive tasks, and are rolling out in over 150 countries and languages.
AI For Good
Google DeepMind unveiled AlphaProteo recently, an AI system that can design novel, high-strength protein binders to serve as the backbone of biological and medical research.
The details: Developing protein binders that attach to target molecules typically requires a lengthy and difficult process. AlphaProteo has "learned" how molecules bind together through training on protein data from the Protein Data Bank and over 100 million predicted protein structures from Google's AlphaFold model.
Google explained, "AlphaProteo generates a candidate protein that binds to the target at specified locations when given the structure of a target molecule and a set of preferred binding locations."
Despite some limitations, Google found that the model outperformed other design methods, suggesting it could significantly reduce the time needed for initial protein binder experiments across various applications.
Why it matters: Google claims that AlphaProteo's predicted binders can accelerate advancements in drug development, disease diagnosis and understanding, and cell and tissue imaging.
Preetham Venkatesh from the University of Washington highlighted the potential impact in a similar research paper last year: "Many diseases remain difficult to treat today simply because detecting certain molecules in the body poses such a challenge. Designed proteins may offer a more cost-effective alternative to antibodies as diagnostic tools."

Using Google Gemini Gems
Google's been busy lately. They've just rolled out some pretty cool updates to their Gemini platform. The big news? Custom Gems and something called Imagen 3. Let's break it down.
Custom Gems: Your Very Own AI Sidekick
First up, we've got Custom Gems. Think of them as your personal AI experts that you can create from scratch. Pretty neat, right?
Here's the deal: if you're using Gemini Advanced, Business, or Enterprise, you can now make these Gems to help you out with all sorts of stuff. Want an AI that's an expert on obscure 80s movies? Or maybe one that can help you plan the perfect vacation? You got it.
The cool thing is, you can use these Gems on your computer or phone, and they're available in a ton of countries - over 150, actually. That's a lot of AI power at your fingertips.
Google's even made some ready-to-go Gems to get you started:
- There's a Learning Coach to help make tricky topics easier to get your head around.
- A Brainstormer for when you're stuck on ideas for gifts or events.
- A Career Guide if you're looking to level up your work game.
- A Writing Editor to help polish up your prose.
- And a Coding Partner for all you tech wizards out there.
Making Your Own Gem: It's Not Rocket Science
Creating your own Gem is pretty straightforward. You hop onto the Gemini website, find the Gem Manager, and hit that "New Gem" button. Give your Gem a name (the funnier, the better), and then you basically tell it what you want it to do.
Think of it like training a very smart dog, except this dog can do your taxes or help you write a novel. You can even ask for help if you're not sure what to tell it. Once you're done, you've got your very own AI assistant ready to chat.
You can check this tutorial for more.
AI That Thinks It's An Artist
Let’s discuss about Imagen 3. This is Google's fancy new image generator. You type in what you want, and boom - it creates an image for you. Want a picture of a cat riding a unicycle on Mars? Imagen 3 has got you covered.
It can do all sorts of styles, from photos that look real enough to fool your friends, to wacky cartoon stuff. And if you don't like what it makes, you can just ask it to try again. It's like having an artist on call, except this one never gets tired or asks for coffee breaks.
One cool new thing: Imagen 3 can now create images of people. But don't worry, they've put in some guardrails to make sure things don't get weird or creepy.
Right now, Imagen 3 is only available in English and for certain Gemini users, but they're planning to roll it out to more people soon.
Using Gems to Make Your Life Easier (Or At Least More Interesting)
So, how can these Gems actually help you out in real life? Well, let me count the ways:
1. Got a bunch of boring tasks you hate doing? Make a Gem to handle them. Scheduling, reminders, sorting through emails - your AI buddy's got your back.
2. Trying to get fit but can't afford a personal trainer? Create a Gem that keeps track of your workouts and tells you what to eat. It's like having a gym buddy who never skips leg day.
3. Always forgetting stuff? Set up a Gem to organize your to-do lists and remind you of important things. It's like a personal assistant, minus the attitude.
4. Writer's block got you down? Make a Gem that throws creative ideas at you until something sticks. It's brainstorming on steroids.
5. Want to learn something new but textbooks put you to sleep? Create a Gem that teaches you stuff in a way that actually keeps you awake. It's like having a tutor who's always available and never judges you for asking the same question five times.
Google Gems may end up replacing many of the AI personal care apps that exist.
