Using AI tools for research and grant writing

Prompt

I’m adding a new section with prompt advice or offering a prompt you can try and modify on your own.

The first prompt I used in Ideogram.ai an AI image creation tool.

create a visually captivating minimalist artwork featuring a computer silhouette in sunset tones against a black background. Emphasize simplicity and elegance, with clean lines and minimal detail. Capture the essence of modern minimalism, allowing for negative space to enhance the overall composition

You can change the ‘computer silhouette’ variable to change what the resulting image is based upon. Let me know your results.

AI is useful for several things. Mostly as a way to do a few simple tasks faster and more efficiently. It can help write a blog post, and give you some branding ideas for logos. AI can be used for image creation and generation and some AI has been used in other ways, such as text-to-video creation, or pdf summarizing.

One additional way that AI can be used is in research. Perplexity.ai is a tool that searches the internet for results around your query. Then it returns a summary of those online resources and offers the corresponding links for reference too. This works a lot better than ChatGPT or Claude.ai have worked in the past. Though those tools are not optimized for accessing the internet it does not keep them from responding as if they can. Often Claude and ChatGPT would hallucinate an answer.

One app useful for research is Upword.ai. Before the recent ChatGPT update, Upword was a very useful tool for summarizing long complex PDFs and other documents. It still is in fact. Upword.ai was built using ChatGPT 4.0, so you can just use ChatGPT instead. However, if you are working with private documents it would be better to use a private tool like Upword instead.

Semantic Scholar is an AI research tool developed by the Allen Institute. Semantic Scholar is designed to highlight the most important and influential elements of a paper, using advances in natural language processing to provide a more efficient way to navigate the scientific literature. It is intended to identify hidden connections and links between research topics, and it exploits graph structures.

Scite.ai is a platform that provides Smart Citations, allowing users to see how a publication has been cited by providing the context of the citation and a classification describing whether it provides supporting or contrasting evidence for the cited claim.

And I’ll end this by mentioning Grantable an AI tool for grant writing. The tool allows users to upload a Request for Proposal (RFP), and its AI software will automatically draft responses for users to review and finalize. It is designed to expedite the grant writing process, potentially enabling users to write and win grant funding five times faster. While the tool automates the generation of responses to the RFP, it still requires human input to finalize the responses, making it a user-friendly AI-based writing solution.
